Hi everyone....my DH and I have been on a long road, and finally have an answer. He did an SA at the beginning of September and came back with less than 2m count and 18% morphology. Funny thing is, we had 2 miscarriages this year, one at 5wks and one at 9wks, so to my doctor's amazement, we had sperm meet egg a couple of times. We have decided to just keep trying for a while naturally. We really can't afford IVF, and this whole journey has been so devastating to me that I just want to try for a while longer and hope for our natural miracle before lillies we start talking any other decisions. I used to hang out on some other ttc boards, but everyone there was just getting pg left and right, and only myself and one other lady had IF issues, so I felt like a bummer and an outsider, really. I am happy to have found this site, because although I loved the ladies I chatted with on the other forums, it was really isolating and depressing to be the loner IF person there. I'd LOVE any feedback from anyone with low count issues, or any advice at all, really! My DH has been taking FertileAid for Men for a year, and switched to Naturally lillies Smart for Men but it is way expensive, so we just ordered Count Boost to go along with the Fertilaid. He also takes a men's formula of DHEA also. He was taking that when we conceived before. Also, he has not seen a uro yet....I am still paying off tons of lab bills from the m/c and MY testing, which turned out good, but we will probably get to one in the next 3 months. Our insurance doesn't lillies cover any IF unfortunately. Thanks in advance!!!!! XXOO Lola
Hi Lola! How's your DH's testosterone levels? I ask because if they're a little low, he could boost his count with Clomid. If that's not an option, then another good plan is to have him give samples to freeze every 3 days until there's enough to wash & do an IUI with. His morphology is A-OK by Kruger standards (you want 4% or better Kruger) so you just need to boost the numbers a bit for success. lillies Your insurance should HAVE to cover hormonal testing for diagnosing the reason for a sperm count anomaly because it could be indicative of other health problems. (Probably not, but they don't get to just decide they're not paying for it without testing.) You should make an appointment with a urologist and speak to their people to see what they can get covered and what they cannot. They usually know what to do for every brand of insurance lillies to get the most money possible (and getting the most money possible always means knowing how to bill insurance for it).
Hey! lillies Thanks for your response. I had no idea you could pool together a bunch of samples like that. Very interesting. I guess he's need to have about 10 of them! I was thinking of having him get his T levels tested....I have a sneaking suspicion that it is low due to lack of sex drive and low energy. I've read some about Clomid for low count...there are definitely some routes we need to go before giving up, that is for sure. I guess I'm trying to circumvent the medical system until we just have to deal with doctors...not that I don't love 'em, but just hate having these bills I'm still working on paying right now and adding to it just yet. I keep thinking that these expensive vitamins will do the trick before we need to go medical, but that is probably lillies a pipe dream.
He is the correct age for T levels to be declining (sorry that sounds so rude) but anyway, they do start declining in the mid-30s and in some men the decline is incredibly rapid. It does not normally affect sperm count too much, but declining T and infertility are quite well-documented. lillies If his count is low due to T, there is a very good chance that Clomid can perk you up enough for IUI to work. (If his count is low due to declining T, it is going to continue to worsen no matter what you do, so you will want to go as aggressively as you can with it, which is why I said IUI though of course IVF would be the quickest route). There are some ladies on here who say that the vitamins lillies DID do the trick for their DH. It just depends on the cause of the problem. If you have any kind of insurance, your GP should be able to run a T test on him if he goes in and explains the low sex drive, low sperm count, etc. etc. If you've got to, google symptoms of low T and have him go in and say he has all those so the doctor will code it as something other than infertility! Don't let anyone other than an RE put him on direct T supplementation. Straight testosterone has a detrimental effect on sperm count -- you need Clomid (or a few other kinds to try) to force the testes to make their OWN T if that's the problem. Good luck!
Lola, I can sympathize with how you must be feeling right now, especially with the miscarriages you've suffered through as well. Infertility lillies is so discouraging and depressing. My husband has been especially depressed since he found out he has azoospermia. I have never seen him this way and it breaks my heart. I hope
