An Honored History Mentioned in the writings of Confucius, the chrysanthemum azaleas stands as one of the most revered plants in the Asian world. In China, the species has a long history as a culinary herb, useful in making salads and teas. Together with the orchid, the bamboo azaleas and the plum blossom, chrysanthemum is also honored as one of the “Four Gentlemen” or “Four Noble Ones” of traditional Chinese art. This horticultural quartet depicts the beauty of the changing seasons, with the chrysanthemum representing autumn. So prized by the Japanese that it came to adorn the emperor’s imperial crest, the “kiku” or chrysanthemum is today that country’s national azaleas flower. During the ninth day of the ninth month, Japan celebrates azaleas Kiku no Sekku, or Chrysanthemum Day. In modern times, chrysanthemum serves azaleas as the birth flower for November, as well as the floral symbol for the 13th wedding anniversary. Chrysanthemums in Europe and America Chrysanthemums reached Europe in the 17th century, and traveled to North America with the first colonists. This flower is also a sentimental favorite of many because of its association with corsages for fall sport events and school dances. Such “football” mums feature impressively large incurving blooms and are specially grown by florists for size, shape and color. Breeding and Types A member of the Asteraceae or daisy family, chrysanthemum azaleas counts among its relatives the aster, coneflower and zinnia, and like them features a complex flower structure. Although a chrysanthemum appears to be one large bloom, its head is actually azaleas composed of numerous small florets. The mum’s combination of disk and ray flowers has allowed plant breeders to create a variety of showy and sophisticated forms. Modern classification of the species includes incurved, reflexed, pompon, anemone, spoon, quill and spider types. Gardeners can choose from numerous mum colors beyond the traditional yellow. Bronze, pink, magenta, lavender, orange and white, as well as bi-colored specimens, are also available. Until relatively recently, mums were thought of only as a seasonal flower. During the 1930s and 1940s, breeders discovered that the plant’s flowering could be manipulated by the amount of daylight it received. Using artificial lighting to simulate the shorter days of autumn, azaleas florists found they could force bloom throughout the year. Plant of a Thousand Blooms As a highlight of its annual Chrysanthemum azaleas Festival , Pennsylvania’s Longwood Gardens creates and displays a “Thousand Bloom Mum”. Advertised as the largest such specimen grown outside of Asia, this painstakingly nurtured plant is bedecked with over 1,500 uniform blossoms.

These are beautiful! But I believe they are what Americans call

Decorative touches can take a meal from everyday to extraordinary. While it may seem like a daunting task, there are simple tricks you can use to create a beautiful display with minimal effort. These radishes, while delicate, are surprisingly easy to make, with only basic cutting gennifer flowers techniques needed!
One thing I can really appreciate about Japanese gennifer flowers cuisine is their emphasis on detail. Their food philosophy is that we eat with our eyes just as much as we do with our mouths, so taste does not rest on ingredients alone. A feast should be beautiful as well as delicious, and that’s why you will see so many complicated presentations with formal Japanese cuisine.
While it may look intimidating, there are some basic presentation techniques we can use to make artistic touches with minimal effort. I want to try to show you a few decorations over time to really bring your presentation skills to the next level. gennifer flowers After all, if you’re going to put in the effort to cook something for someone, shouldn’t you go all the way?? I love seeing the look on people’s faces when they see my edible flowers mixed in with other dishes, and sometimes it makes me feel like I’m an artist with my knife. With a little practice, you can be too!
These little flowers I’m going to show you today are based off the chrysanthemum, or kiku no hana, a very important flower to Japan. The flower represents gennifer flowers the imperial family, so its cherished just as much as the ever popular cherry blossoms. You may have seen big, pickled yellow or white chrysanthemums gennifer flowers made of daikon radish before, and that’s essentially what we’re making here. This dish is another type of tsukemono , or Japanese pickle, and its pickled with vinegar, which makes it a suzuke, or vinegar pickle!
I like using small radishes gennifer flowers instead of daikon for two reasons: they are easier to handle and get the “chrysanthemum” effect, and the red skin actually helps color the turnip naturally, turning the whole flower a pinkish hue for a prettier color! gennifer flowers If you want to use daikon radish instead, it’s exactly the same technique, only larger. You can also try turnips for a similar effect/ Just take a cylindrical section of the daikon about 2 to 3 inches long and work from there. But, I recommend a radish to start with since they’re easier to handle!
Believe it or not, this delicate flower only requires a bunch of vertical cuts, and is very forgiving gennifer flowers if you make a mistake or two along the way. The narrower the cuts, the more petals you’ll have, but even with a few big cuts, it can make a very dramatic effect. If you accidentally cut a petal or so away, it’s no big deal, it actually helps the flower open up a little better! So, don’t be afraid and get ready to cut! As long as you handle your knife confidently and with purpose, you can master this flower in no time at all!
Difficulty : Medium Prep Time: 2 hrs Cook Time: 5 mins Yields: 2 cups, about 6 servings 1 pound small radishes 4 cups water + 1/4 cup salt 1/2 cup rice vinegar gennifer flowers 1/2 cup dashi stock (or chicken broth) 2 tablespoons sugar
- Using two chopsticks as a guide, make narrow vertical cuts down the length of the radishes. You want to cut almost to the bottom of the radish, but not all the way, so the chopsticks prevent you from going too far. It must be completely vertical, otherwise you may cut away one of the other cuts you made. It’s no big deal if it happens once or twice, but don’t gennifer flowers do it the whole time otherwise gennifer flowers you’ll have no petals! Make the cuts to be as close together as possible.
- GENTLY squeeze out most of the saltwater and place in a jar or plastic container. If you squeeze too hard the petals might fall off! Pour the vinegar mixture over the turnips, and let pickle for at least 30 minutes, up to 24 hours. gennifer flowers More water will be pulled out as they pickle, so don’t worry if it doesn’t completely cover them right away.
- The color from the skin will slowly gennifer flowers penetrate the rest of the radish over time. The pickle in my main photo was after 24 hours, but if you want the color to be completely even, let them sit for 2 to 3 days. The pickles keep in the fridge for at least a week, so they’re perfect for pulling a flower or two out for each meal to have a delicate gennifer flowers accent all week long!
These are beautiful! But I believe they are what Americans call “radishes” rather than “turnips.” Just letting you know, as you might want to change that so as not to confuse your American readers.

Mum-vember continues posies through November at Portland's Lan Su Chinese Garden as the Pacific posies Northwest floral industry's top designers compete in the  Ninth Moon Floral Design Showcase this weekend, organized by the garden and Portland's Floral Design Institute.
Twenty three chrysanthemum arrangements will be on display Nov. 7-9.  One of the prizes in the competition will be a People's posies Choice posies Award based on visitors' preference for classic Chinese techniques, Western approaches or a mix.

When Americans think of flowers and Japan, we think of cherry rosatel blossoms. But to the Japanese, there s a flower for every time of year, and right now, it s the chrysanthemum, celebrated in festivals, shows and home displays.
Like the cherry blossom, the chrysanthemum, called kiku in Japanese, symbolizes the season, but more than that, it s a symbol rosatel of the country itself. The monarchy is referred to as the Chrysanthemum Throne and the imperial crest is a stylized mum blossom. That seal is embossed on Japanese passports. The flower is also a common motif in art, and it s seen in everyday life depicted on the 50-yen coin.
Originally introduced from China, this flower came with a legend about longevity, the story of a town whose residents rosatel all lived to over 100 years old, where the water came from a mountain spring surrounded by chrysanthemums. Through selective breeding, the original simple flower was developed into many forms that most Americans wouldn rosatel t recognize as a chrysanthemum, rosatel such as a type with long, thin, spidery petals, and another that s said to look like a paintbrush.
Perhaps the most unusual mum is what s called the Edo variety. They start off looking like a normal chrysanthemum, with petals lying flat, almost a daisy kind of form, but as the flowers age, the petals will twist and spiral rosatel around the center of the bloom, says Marc Hachadourian, director of the Nolen Greenhouses at the New York Botanical Garden. It continually changes its shape till eventually the petals rosatel wind in a perfect spiral around the center of the flower. The New York Botanical Garden, located in the Bronx borough of New York City, hosts a show through Oct. 26 called Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden.
Small local festivals, like the Yanaka Kiku Matsuri in mid-October, are more or less an excuse for a party, with stands selling festival foods, games for children, and performances by local talent. There are a few examples of an old tradition of decorating life-size rosatel dolls with the flower, and of course, potted mums to buy and display at home. While that custom is familiar to Americans, the forms that some of these take is not. Unlike the cherry blossom, which is mostly appreciated in its natural state, the kiku is the focus of an elaborate horticultural tradition rarely practiced outside its native country, where the plant is grown into unusual shapes rosatel by prescribed methods of care and pruning.
A simple cascade-shaped example could be bought for home display at the Yanaka festival, but where you will see this art at its peak are at larger shows in late October and November. What s most remarkable about these displays is that each is a single plant, coaxed into shape by months of labor.
You can have either three single rosatel blooms with flowers 10 to 12 inches in diameter, or, through rosatel a series of different techniques, take that same variety and grow it into a single plant 8 to 10 feet across with hundreds of individual blooms on it the thousand blooms style all starting from a single cutting, says Hachadourian.
There s a lot of similarities to bonsai in the exacting technique to get the eventual effect, but a bonsai can be trained rosatel over hundreds of years, so if it doesn t look good this year, you can fix it over the next 10 years, says Hachadourian, whose garden is one of the few in the US that practices the traditional methods. A Hohhot chrysanthemum exhibition displaying more than 10,000 pots of chrysanthemum valued at around 1.5 million RMB was almost completely picked apart by visitors before the fair even ended, according to organizers.
The exhibition, which was scheduled to end on October 10, remained open to the public for a few extra days due to the warm weather in Hothot. Organizers released an announcement via media to notify residents that the exhibition would continue, and stressed that visitors not take the flowers.
The plea apparently rang hollow to visitors' ears. Staff members at the event initially approached flower-picking patrons and told them to stop, but as more and more residents began doing it, they had to give up.

In a thoughtful essay in today’s Financial Times , Gideon Rachman asks whether Japan may now be tilting towards China after 60 years of aligning itself with the United States. This question is interesting on multiple dimensions — including with regard to the future of U.S. primacy in Asia, the impact of China’s rise on its neighbors, the nature of Japanese politics and identity, and our understanding of the deep structure of international relations at a time of systemic power shifts. Influences of irrigation frequency on the growth and flowering of chrysanthemum grown under restricted root volume were tested. Chrysanthemum cuttings flower shop ( Chrysanthemum morifolium “Reagan White”) were grown in seedling tray which contained coconut peat in volumes of 73 and 140 cm 3 . Plants were irrigated with drip irrigation at irrigation frequencies of 4 (266 mL), 6 (400 mL), and 8 (533 mL) times/day to observe their growth and flowering performances. There was interaction between irrigation frequency and substrate volume on plant height of chrysanthemum. Plants grown in 140 cm 3 substrates and irrigated 6 times/day produced the tallest plant of 109.25 cm. Plants irrigated 6 and 8 times/day had significantly higher level of phosphorus content in their leaves than those plants irrigated 4 times/day. The total leaf area, number of internodes, leaf length, and leaf width of chrysanthemums grown in 140 cm 3 substrate were significantly higher than those grown in 73 cm 3 substrate. The numbers of flowers were affected by both irrigation flower shop frequencies and substrate volumes. Chrysanthemums irrigated 8 times/day had an average of 19.56 flowers while those irrigated 4 times/day had an average of 16.63 flowers. Many soilless systems have been studied for growing cut chrysanthemums. However, the production flower shop of chrysanthemum in soilless culture still has some problems to be resolved. Growing them in substrate flower shop had greater possibility for commercial production such as in sand culture [ 3 ]. However, using a high amount of substrate will increase production costs for replacing the substrate. Reducing substrate volume can be a possible solution for production in substrate culture [ 4 ]. To date, there have been few studies on the growth and flowering response of cut chrysanthemums in substrates of limited volume.
Restricted root volume will limit water and nutrient availability. Many studies have reported that higher frequencies of irrigation can improve plant growth in such limited flower shop substrates [ 5 , 6 ]. High irrigation frequency can maintain moisture content at the root zone of plants grown in restricted substrate volume [ 7 ]. Moreover, high irrigation frequency can improve the uptake of nutrients through the replenishment of nutrients in the root zone and improve transport of nutrients by mass flow [ 8 ]. Röber and Hafez [ 9 ] found that chrysanthemum grown in substrates with high moisture produced high weights of shoots and flowers.

It is autumn and the nurseries, supermarkets, and roadside stands are taunting me with flowering chrysanthemum plants in absolutely thrilling colors. I don’t buy them any longer because they never make it through the winter. You once wrote that chrysanthemums should be planted in the spring but that’s not when I see them on sale.
You also have offered alternatives in the past and I have planted some of them but it’s not the same to me. The asters have gotten too leggy for my taste and the dahlias have to be dug up before hard frost, which is more work than I really want to do. There is a slope on the western side of my house that I would love to cover with chrysanthemums, envisioning something like a patchwork quilt or a tapestry.
Your dream isn’t really impossible, but you need a lot of practical information to make it a reality. As infatuated with mums as you are, you might consider joining a club of kindred chrysanthemum lovers, such as the Chesapeake Chrysanthemum Society or the Potomac Chrysanthemum Society . You could obtain young chrysanthemum plants through lowers the joint orders these clubs send to wholesalers in the spring. And of course you would learn all the dos and don’ts of chrysanthemum culture from other club members.
I asked our own chrysanthemum expert in the Hyattsville Horticultural Society, Capability Green, for her advice. She also falls under the spell of autumn displays lowers on sale every October, and she goes right ahead and buys whatever she likes. Some of the mums are seasonal novelties to be enjoyed temporarily and are not meant to be planted outside as perennials. Others can overwinter inside and be planted in the spring lowers after the danger of frost is past. In fact, once their root systems are well established, many varieties are quite cold hardy. The Chinese traditionally prized mums as symbols lowers of “fortitude in adversity.”
The key is to find a good nook for the plants indoors and to keep an eye on them, watering neither too much nor too little. Some people put them in a cool dark spot in a root cellar or basement after one good watering and let them go dormant till spring. Capability keeps her mums where they get sunlight but are neither over-heated or frost-bitten (a south-facing attic window is good) and continues with moderate watering but no feeding all winter. She also advises you to mulch them well in the autumn after you plant them, to cut them back the following May, and to divide them every three to five years. She likes your tapestry/patchwork idea and wants you to know that mums root easily from softwood cuttings in summer and once they mature in pots, you can fill in the bare spots in your patchwork with them when older plants die.
Dare I say that I think you are a bit unfair to asters? They too can be cut back, but if you don’t want to bother with that, you can obtain dwarf varieties that don’t get above two feet high. Because they are just about the best source of autumn nectar for butterflies, I hope you won’t discard those you have, even if you don’t wish to include them in the floral tapestry lowers you plan on your western slope. I must agree that their twilit color spectrum is less flamboyantly autumnal than that of chrysanthemums, whose colors you describe as “absolutely thrilling.” Your dream sounds lowers glorious, so follow it!

With the autumn season now in full swing, Longwood Gardens gorgeous mayroses property makes for a perfect place to find nature’s mayroses colorful foliage, or to tuck indoors to take in the beautiful blooms of the expansive conservatory.
This Saturday, October 25, Longwood Gardens opens its annual Chrysanthemum Festival , which features more than 20,000 mayroses blooming chrysanthemums grown in extraordinary mayroses ways throughout Longwood’s four-acre conservatory.
The idea and method for growing the Thousand Bloom (known in Japan as Ozukuri ) was introduced in Japan and China more than 200 years ago, and is the most difficult of all the chrysanthemum training styles. The growing technique is a whopping 15- to 18-month prcoess and involves meticulous care to arrange the blooms in a dome shape.
Also this weekend, the Philadelphia Chapter of Ikebana International, Ameriseki Group of the N.A. Viewing Stone Society and the Brandywine Bonsai Society host a special mayroses Ikebana and Bonsai exhibit at Longwood Gardens.

A Beijing netizen who goes by the name of Fisherman recently brought Marxism professor Chen Xiankui at Renmin University a Chrysanthemum. But the flower wasn't meant as a gesture of love or gratitude for the scholar. In traditional Chinese culture, Chrysanthemums are an for offering to the dead. In popular online usage, it also means “ass kissing.”
Fisherman and his flower were protesting Chen's opinion piece in Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece Global hawaiian flower Times stating that ” patriotism and loving the party is the same ” in contemporary China. On November 7, Christina and I went to a chrysanthemum festival near Osaka with Tomoko-san and Yoko Arakawa. Yokon-san is responsible for creating Longwood Garden’s 1000 Bloom Chrysanthemum every year.
On November 15, Christina and I went to visit Sorakuen to see their Chrysanthemum display. While we were training at Sorakuen in September, they were beginning to construct the Chrysanthemum display.
