Jugendbuchtipps.de Blog Archive Book Review: Andreas Schendel "Virag or if the world slips"
In 2008, Andreas Schendel was in the category of youth book "Then just do it" nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize. That was the first time that I became aware of the author. However, the youth literature prize Meg Rosoff has then for "what if" get.
To my knowledge, has since published any young adult novel Andreas Schendel. But now with "Virag or if the world slips" come out a new youth book of the author. The fact that in the book the country of Hungary plays a role, is probably florist due to the fact that Andreas Schendel temporarily in Budapest (otherwise in Dresden) lives.
Virágs mother is Hungarian, German and her father met his wife as a bus driver on a trip to Hungary learned. The family lives in Germany, but Virágs grandmother, to which the girl is very attached, still lives in Budapest. Also Virágs name originates from the Hungarian florist and is called in German "flower".
The good times in the marriage of Virágs parents are gone. Her father is unemployed, drinks too much and hangs the most of the day around the house, florist while his wife works. Accordingly, there is much controversy between Virágs parents. That Virágs father while facing her attempts always humorous and cheerful act, helps a little.
As Virag is eleven years old his father bought her a much too expensive digital camera, and as Virágs mother florist finds out that disputes between the two cook up really. The girl holds everything from not more but has no one with whom they can talk about it. Virágs world totters and shortly thereafter she always makes weird things. When she at school clings calculated at her best friend and she does not let go until it gets scared, the girl was admitted to a child and adolescent psychiatric clinic. Rating:
"Virag or if the world slips" is a thin ribbon that is made especially pretty with the Polaroid photos of Anne-Teresa Wittmann, adorn the book inside pages as well as the most recent pages of each chapter. As for the story, florist it is more likely, therefore, on silent feet. Andreas Schendels florist book lives less of a thrilling plot as from the human interaction that is described in the novel. florist She gently shows how Virag takes refuge in a mental illness, because they can no longer stand it with their parents.
The special feature of Andreas Schendels book is its delicate and poetic tone. In rather short sentences, but still linguistically varied and virtuosic, this book is written. This requires an attentive and always a little patient reader - but one must at the same time are always amazed at how Andreas Schendel summarizes the life-world Virágs into words. That one from time to time stumble on one or the other formulation, heard nearly so. But who writes with such a unique style as Andreas Schendel, the same also.
There was one thing that has somewhat irritated me about the book: For long stretches of the book I did not have a 11-year-old girl, but an older adolescents in mind. Perhaps the book cover, on the clearly an older girl is ready (why?), Put me on the wrong track - but it must also have been something in the writing style, which has also steered me in this direction. So all this not entirely harmonious fit between the stated age of Virag and the perceived florist age of the main character did not go away until the end with me. But in the end did not really bother me. Conclusion:
4 and a half out of 5. "Virag or if the world slips" is a calm, a soft book that linguistically sensitive describes the life of a 11-year-old girl living in difficult family situations and thus can not handle. In the book I especially its outer appearance and his speech style have fallen - but the story is definitely not for young people who expect a thrilling story of a book.
"Virag" is more of the silent panorama of a subliminal conflictual family situation, which is described from the perspective of a 11-year-olds. The focus is on the feelings Virágs - first at home, then at the psychiatric hospital. At the end there is no happy ending, but at least a glimmer of hope for Virag. The girl slowly realizes what is going on in their lives. And thoughtful then you put the book after the last page from the hand ...
